Today I want to talk to you about making changes and reinventing yourself. I am writing this from Port Maurelle Vava’u where my family has a beachfront house in Vava’u….with the Queen’s birthday long weekend I decided to duck off to Vava’u for 6 days for a little R & R. The beach shack as we call it is a gorgeous 2 storey cottage, on 5 acres of beachfront land overlooking Port Maurelle Beach… the beach here is amazing, with very high clarity and teaming with coral and fish and sea life; it makes it one of my biggest pleasures to snorkle and discover the peaceful underwater world.
Now if you follow me and my journey you’d know I like to travel for months at a time and like to experience the challenges of running my business from all corners of the globe.
As you might also be aware back in 1999 when I started my business journey I was a 29-year-old, pregnant and broke. I wanted a change. I overstepped my fears and went to my dreams.
Don’t get me wrong, I was employed in a teaching job as a vocational business trainer, I had a mortgage and a car loan…. but the truth is I had a 3 1/2-year-old, I was 9 months pregnant… I had the total saving of $273 and I was living month to month… occasionally borrowing from my mum to make do. Here is where I think I had a breakthrough. I didn’t buy into ego bullshit. I didn’t think hey ‘ I am doing ok, I own and am paying off my apartment in Strathfield, I am uni qualified all is well”…. my breakthrough was when I thought ‘ I know I KNOW I am capable of more than just THIS. You see fear holds you stagnating when you know in your heart you should be finding other options, and having the courage to do so is what differentiates the doers from the dreamers.
I see so many people lie to themselves, tell themselves they ‘like’ what they are doing, and keep being miserable day in day out for years… ‘fear frozen’ I call it. It’s a pitiful space to be in. Yet 98% of people get stuck in that painful space; of doing what they have come to hate, yet they keep telling themselves they like it out of pure fear. An epiphany. Perhaps.
So how do you make a change. How do you make shifts?
People often try to complicate things: To analyse. To research. To plan. I think genius is in Simplicity.
You know the answer. You need to just be honest enough with yourself and have the courage to make the change. Your current career has become a drag. No problem! Have the courage to make choices; don’t be scared of making mistakes. We are human, we make mistakes all the time- we don’t die just because we make mistakes, in fact, we grow and become more interesting because of those mistakes:)
So search your heart as to which new direction you want to head towards, then take a deep breath and make the shift. Reinvent yourself and celebrate your ability to be something new, fresh and most importantly something that makes you truly happy.
For example, I know that having lifestyle independence makes me happiest. So I worked hard to run location independent business models, I used that to develop business platforms that can help others be free too, that makes me happy, that picture kept evolving every year. Without regard for what others think of you, without regard for your obligations; ask yourself what really truly would make YOU happy… I am betting you know the answer to that question. Is it a complete career overhaul? Is it a shift into something you love doing but never had the ‘guts’ to pursue as a ‘career’.
And that is what its all about, having the courage to be all that you can be, for YOU.
Me, am doing it. I created it, applied it, and am living it. Right here in Vava’u Port Maurelle beach I am running my business for 2 to 3 hours a day, swimming and diving the rest of the time, mixing with the locals who I like a lot, every evening I am answering questions from future entrepreneurs, helping them find their own pathway and I supervise a hand full of other business projects. My cup runneth over. I am living my best life right here, right now.
Word of advice; don’t copycat, make that change, take your OWN path, find your groove. I promise you, you will never regret it:)
